If your maid's visa has been cancelled in Dubai, they can no longer live or work in the UAE on that visa. A limited permitted stay applies after cancellation. Within that period, your maid must either leave the UAE or have a new sponsor complete a new work permit and residence process.
Sponsorship does not transfer automatically after cancellation. A new household cannot employ a domestic worker on a cancelled visa. The exact deadline depends on the cancellation record and residence category, so confirm it with the immigration authority before you plan the next step.
Check Your Maid's Current Status
Before you agree to employ your maid or arrange new sponsorship, confirm what has been cancelled and when. Four terms are often confused:
Term | What it means | Authority |
|---|---|---|
Work permit / employment cancellation | The employment relationship and work permit with the previous employer have ended | MOHRE |
Residence visa cancellation | The residence permit linked to that employment has ended and the permitted stay begins | GDRFA Dubai (Dubai-issued) or ICP (other emirates) |
New sponsorship | A new employer or licensed domestic worker centre applies for a new work permit, contract and residence visa | MOHRE, then GDRFA Dubai or ICP |
Status amendment (change of status) | The domestic worker's immigration status is changed inside the UAE, with no need to exit before the new residence process | MOHRE service linked to ICP |
Then check these points:
Residence cancellation date. The permitted stay is counted from the residence cancellation or expiry recorded by the immigration authority. Ask for the residence cancellation paper.
Issuing emirate. A Dubai-issued residence is handled by GDRFA Dubai. Residence issued in other emirates is handled by ICP.
Work permit status. MOHRE's new domestic worker work permit service states that the proposed worker may not hold a valid work permit. The previous permit must be closed before a new one can be issued.
Previous sponsor type. Your maid may have been sponsored by a private household or by a licensed domestic worker centre. Confirm which, as this affects who holds the cancellation documents.
Location. Confirm your maid is inside the UAE. The in-country route described below applies only while they are present in the country.
Open issues. Confirm there is no unresolved complaint, absconding report or fine on file. Any of these may affect a new application.

Maid Visa Grace Period in Dubai: How Long Can They Stay?
There is no single maid visa grace period in Dubai that applies to every domestic worker. Two government sources currently describe the permitted stay differently.
Source | What it states |
|---|---|
GDRFA Dubai – Cancellation of all types of residence permits | A general grace period of 60 days to remain in the country after a residence permit is cancelled or expires |
Grace periods by residence category: 180 days (Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and certain other groups), 90 days (skilled workers at levels 1–3 and property owners), 60 days (residence permits issued with a guarantor or host) and 30 days (all other categories) |
The GDRFA page sets one general figure for Dubai residence cancellations. The ICP page sets federal figures by category. ICP's page does not name domestic workers in a specific grace-period tier. It states that domestic worker residence cancellation is handled through MOHRE or the Domestic Work Bundle.
Because of this difference, do not rely on a figure from a website, including this one. Use the date on your maid's own record:
Check the cancellation paper.
Check the status through the GDRFA Dubai or ICP smart services, or ask the authority directly.
Count the days from the cancellation date shown on that record.
A separate MOHRE deadline applies once a change of status is issued. MOHRE's Change of Employer for a Domestic Worker service states that a change of status is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued, and that fines are imposed on the domestic worker after that period. This is a different clock from the post-cancellation grace period.

Can Your Maid Get a New Sponsor After Cancellation?
Yes, a new sponsorship process can begin after maid visa cancellation. Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 gives domestic workers the right to transfer to a new employer, subject to MOHRE conditions. Nothing transfers automatically: the new sponsor must apply to MOHRE for a new work permit and contract, then complete the residence steps. The new sponsor can be a private household that meets the requirements, or a MOHRE-licensed domestic worker services centre. MOHRE also requires the previous work permit to be closed and the worker’s passport to be valid for at least three months. Approval rests with the authorities.
Maid Visa Status Change in Dubai: Can They Stay in the UAE?
Your maid may be able to stay in the UAE and move to a new sponsor through an in-country status change. This is not available in every situation.
MOHRE's Change of Employer for a Domestic Worker service is for employers who want to change the employer of a domestic worker inside the country. MOHRE describes this as a change of status and lists ICP as the linked authority. For a Dubai-issued residence, the residence file itself sits with GDRFA Dubai.
In-country status amendment may be possible when:
your maid is physically inside the UAE;
the previous visa cancellation is complete and on record;
the permitted stay has not ended;
the new sponsor meets MOHRE's conditions, including a valid passport, valid Emirates ID and, for a resident sponsor, a valid residence visa;
the passport is valid for at least three months;
there is no complaint, ban or other restriction on file.
If any of these points is not met, the in-country route may not be available. Your maid may need to leave the UAE and return on a new entry permit. The authority, not the sponsor, decides whether a status change is approved. Once it is issued, the 60-day MOHRE validity explained above applies.
Your Maid Keep Working?
No. Once the work permit and residence visa are cancelled, there is no permission to work for the previous employer or for a new household. The permitted stay allows your maid to remain in the UAE. It does not allow them to work.
Work for a new household can start only after the new sponsor's MOHRE work permit and employment contract have been issued and the required immigration steps are in progress or complete. Do not allow duties to begin on a trial basis while the application is pending.
This protects both sides. You avoid employing a domestic worker without a permit, and your maid keeps a clean record for the new application.
What If Your Maid Leaves the UAE?
Leaving the UAE after cancellation ends the permitted stay, and the in-country status change route no longer applies. The cancelled residence visa does not allow re-entry.
To bring your maid back to work for a new household, the new sponsor must start a new application from outside the country. This includes a new MOHRE work permit and a new entry permit, followed by the in-country residence steps after arrival.
Before travel, check:
that departure is within the permitted stay, so no fine is recorded;
that your maid has the residence cancellation paper and passport;
that there is no restriction on file that could affect a future entry permit.
Leaving and returning can take longer than an in-country change of status. If a new sponsor is confirmed and an in-country change may be possible, ask whether that route is open before booking travel.
What If the Permitted Stay Runs Out?
If the permitted stay expires before your maid leaves the UAE or completes a change of status, they are in the country without valid residence status. Overstay fines then apply for each day spent in the UAE.
An overstay can:
create fines that must be settled before exit or before a new application proceeds;
delay or block a new sponsorship application;
affect the ability to return to the UAE in future.
Fine amounts are set by the federal authorities and can change. Check the current figure with GDRFA Dubai or ICP. If the permitted stay is close to ending, contact the authority or a licensed service centre before the deadline, not after it.
Documents to Check Before Changing Maid Sponsorship
Check these documents before any new sponsorship application is submitted. Requirements are set by MOHRE and the immigration authority and may be updated, so confirm the current list when you apply.
From the worker:
Document | Requirement |
|---|---|
Passport | Valid for at least three months; details must match the cancellation record |
Residence cancellation paper | Cancellation must be complete, with the date and issuing emirate shown |
Previous work permit status | Must be closed with MOHRE |
Colour photograph | Meets MOHRE photo requirements |
Medical fitness | Must be valid |
From the new sponsor:
Document | Requirement |
|---|---|
Passport | Must be valid |
Emirates ID | Valid original |
UAE residence visa (resident sponsors) | Must be valid; not needed for UAE nationals |
Proof of marital status and spouse's residence visa | Required by MOHRE for expatriate employers |
Health insurance for the worker | Must be on the employer’s file; Dubai requires adequate cover |
Signed employment contract | Signed by both parties |
If you use a licensed centre as sponsor, the centre holds the employer file and will tell you which of these it needs from you.
How Expat Maids Can Help
Expat Maids Workers Services Center is a MOHRE-licensed domestic worker services centre in Dubai. We can process a sponsor transfer, and a cancellation visa is one of the current-visa documents we accept for a new application. Approval rests with MOHRE and the immigration authority.
Through our visa services, we:
offer a free consultation on eligibility and requirements;
sponsor your domestic worker under our licence for a two-year residence visa;
handle government steps, including medical tests, Emirates ID biometrics and visa typing;
include health insurance, a WPS salary card, unemployment insurance and end-of-service benefits in the package.
From you, we need copies of your passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID and Ejari or tenancy contract. From your maid, we need a passport copy, the current visa (cancellation or visit) and a high-resolution photo. Our team will advise if your case needs anything further.
