Applying for a maid visa in Dubai involves work and residence procedures such as the work permit, visa issuance, medical fitness, Emirates ID and residence permit.

Step 1: Choose the Domestic Worker Sponsorship Route
Confirm the sponsorship route before starting the application because it determines who completes the government procedures.
Expat Maids Visa Services
With our Visa Services, we sponsor the maid and manage the visa administration. The service covers a two-year residence visa, health insurance and related government processing. We also arrange the medical test and Emirates ID registration as part of the process.
The household therefore does not open its own private sponsor file for this service.
Private Household Sponsorship
With private sponsorship, the household remains the domestic worker’s sponsor and is responsible for meeting the relevant employer requirements.
Our Typing Services support private sponsors with applications including sponsor-file opening, entry permits, status changes, health insurance, residence documentation, Emirates ID typing and medical-test arrangements. We provide the administrative support while the household remains the sponsor.
Step 2: Check Sponsor and Worker Eligibility
MOHRE applies eligibility requirements to both the private household sponsor and the maid. The exact requirements depend on the sponsor category and the maid’s current status, so the correct criteria should be checked for the specific application before submission.
Step 3: Open a Sponsor File for Private Sponsorship, if Required
If a private household sponsor does not already have the required sponsor file, it needs to be opened before the maid’s permit application progresses. Our Typing Services can assist with sponsor-file opening.
This step only applies when the household is sponsoring the maid directly. With Expat Maids Visa Services, we hold the sponsorship, so the household does not need to open its own sponsor file.
Step 4: Apply for the Work Permit and Entry Visa, Where Required
The next stage depends partly on whether the domestic worker is outside or inside the UAE.
For a worker coming from abroad, the relevant work and entry procedures must be completed before the residence process. GDRFA Dubai states that a work entry visa for domestic service workers allows the worker to enter the UAE and complete the requirements for residence after arrival.
For a worker already in the UAE, the existing immigration status must be reviewed before the new sponsorship is processed. The required procedure depends on the type of visa or residence status the worker currently holds.
Step 5: If the Worker Is Already in the UAE, Complete a Status Amendment Where Required
A status amendment can be required when a domestic worker is already in the UAE and needs to move from their existing immigration status to the new sponsorship.
GDRFA Dubai’s current Status Amendment service requires a new visa and documentation relating to the previous entry or residence status. Where a previous residence permit exists, it must be cancelled before the status amendment is completed.
A worker entering Dubai from abroad on a new work entry visa follows the entry route instead. Whether a worker already in the UAE needs a status amendment depends on their existing immigration status.
Step 6: Sign the Domestic Worker Employment Contract
The domestic worker and sponsor must complete the required employment documentation through the approved government process.
Dubai’s integrated Domestic Workers Management service includes the employment contract alongside work-permit and residence procedures. GDRFA Dubai has also confirmed that the employment contract can be signed electronically through the DubaiNow domestic-worker journey.
The contract should reflect the employment terms agreed between the sponsor and the maid.
Step 7: Complete Medical Fitness and Health Insurance
The maid must complete the required medical fitness examination as part of the residence process.
Valid health insurance must also be arranged as part of the residence process. The Emirates ID stage is completed with the residence procedures covered in the next step.
Step 8: Complete the Emirates ID and Residence Process
Once the required employment, immigration, medical and insurance procedures are complete, the domestic worker can proceed with the Emirates ID and residence stages under the approved sponsor.
After approval, check that the worker’s personal and passport details are correct and keep copies of the employment contract, residence information, Emirates ID and insurance records.
What Documents Should You Prepare for a Maid Visa in Dubai?
The exact document list depends on the sponsorship route, employer category and the worker’s current immigration status.
For private household sponsorship, documents prepared at the start can include:
Sponsor passport and Emirates ID
Sponsor UAE residence documents, where applicable
Domestic worker passport
Recent photograph of the domestic worker
Sponsor eligibility or income documents, where required
Existing visa, residence or cancellation records, where relevant
Supporting employment documents required for the work-permit application
Health insurance, medical fitness and Emirates ID records are completed or added as the application progresses.
GDRFA Dubai currently requires a personal photograph and a passport with at least six months’ validity for its work entry visa service. MOHRE applies its own supporting requirements for the domestic worker work permit.
The final checklist varies according to the sponsor category and the worker’s immigration status, so confirm the current requirements before submitting the application.
