Maid Sponsorship Transfer in the UAE: Can She Change Sponsor Without Leaving?

Yes. A domestic worker who is already in the UAE can change sponsor without leaving the country. A maid sponsorship transfer in the UAE is not a direct transfer, though. Her current sponsor cancels her visa, and the new sponsor applies for a new visa through a change of status inside the UAE.

Whether the move can go ahead, and when, depends mainly on her employment contract and whether her current employer agrees.

This guide explains the two-stage process, the approvals needed and what to check for her case, whether you are taking over from another family or moving her from private sponsorship to Expat Maids.

How a Maid Sponsorship Transfer Works

A maid sponsorship transfer in the UAE happens in two stages: her current visa is cancelled, then the new sponsor applies for a new one. The second stage cannot start until the first is complete. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) lists the cancellation of her previous visa as a required document for its change of employer service for domestic workers. So when families ask how to transfer a maid visa in Dubai, the answer is always a cancellation followed by a new application.

Stage 1: Her Current Sponsor Cancels Her Visa

The current sponsor cancels her residence visa. From that date, she has a limited period to change status or leave the UAE, shown on her cancellation document.

Two deadlines apply, and they are separate. The date on her cancellation document is when the change of status must happen by. Once the change of status is issued, it is valid for 60 days.

Stage 2: The New Sponsor Applies for a Change of Status

Because she is already in the UAE, her new visa is processed as a change of status, so she does not need to exit and re-enter the country. When Expat Maids is the new sponsor, the application follows five steps:

  1. Labour contract. A new contract showing her job title and salary is registered with MOHRE. Expat Maids’ minimum salary for all nationalities is AED 1,600 a month.

  2. E-visa. The immigration authority runs a security check and issues an initial e-visa once the application is approved.

  3. Change of status. Her status is updated while she stays in the UAE. MOHRE notes that a change of status is valid for 60 days from issue, after which fines apply.

  4. Medical fitness test and health insurance. A new test is required for every visa application, even if she passed one recently. Results take up to two days, and health insurance follows.

  5. Residence approval and Emirates ID. Residence approval usually takes two to three working days, and the Emirates ID card follows within seven working days. Biometrics are needed only for first-time applicants.

Private sponsors go through the same government stages themselves. Our guide to maid visa application steps in Dubai explains each one.

When MOHRE Allows a Domestic Worker to Change Employer

MOHRE allows a domestic worker to move to a new employer in three situations:

  • Her employment contract has ended.

  • Her current employer agrees in writing while the contract is still valid.

  • A court rules that the employer breached their obligations to her during the contract.

The Domestic Workers Law also allows the employer and the domestic worker to end a contract early by mutual consent. Outside these situations, a domestic worker’s change of employer usually has to wait until her contract ends.

Which Approvals a Change of Sponsor Needs

A change of sponsor needs three approvals:

  1. Her current employer agrees to release her, unless her contract has ended or a court has ruled in her favour.

  2. MOHRE approves the new employment contract and work permit.

  3. The immigration authority approves her change of status and new residence visa. In Dubai, this is the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA). In the other emirates, it is the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).

What to Check Before You Start

Some conditions differ from one domestic worker to the next. Check them before her visa is cancelled, because her time is limited afterwards.

  • Her deadline after cancellation. Her cancellation document shows the date by which she must change status or leave the UAE. The grace period varies by visa category, so always work from the date on the document rather than a standard number.

  • Absconding reports and labour complaints. Any absconding report must be officially lifted, and any labour complaint formally closed, before a new visa application can go ahead.

  • Her previous visa type. Any residence visa qualifies, not only a domestic worker visa, once it has been officially cancelled. The exception is a worker over 60, as explained below.

  • Passport validity. MOHRE requires three months’ validity for the work permit, while ICP requires six months’ validity for the residence permit. Aim for at least six months.

  • Age. She must be at least 18. MOHRE sets an upper age limit of 60, but a worker over 60 who is already in the UAE can be exempt if her domestic worker visa was cancelled no more than three months earlier.

  • Police Clearance Certificate. Whether she needs one depends on her nationality and the current rules.

  • Staying in the UAE. She must remain in the UAE throughout the change of status.

She must not start working for the new sponsor until her new work permit is issued. MOHRE does not allow employing a domestic worker on a trial basis and changing her status afterwards.

What the Current Sponsor Needs to Do

Before the new application can start, the current sponsor should:

  1. Agree the cancellation date with the new sponsor in writing, so she has as much time as possible to change status.

  2. Cancel her visa and give her the cancellation document.

  3. Settle what she is owed for the period she worked. MOHRE confirms that she keeps these entitlements when she moves to a new employer.

Her deadline starts on the cancellation date, so the new sponsor should be ready to apply straight away.

Transferring a Maid From Private Sponsorship to Expat Maids

Expat Maids is a MOHRE-licensed domestic worker services centre in Dubai, listed by MOHRE as Expat Maids Workers Services Center. We can take over sponsorship from another family or from a private sponsor, starting with a free consultation to review her current visa, contract and timing.

You provide copies of your passport, residence visa, Emirates ID and a DEWA bill or Ejari tenancy contract. Your domestic worker provides her passport, current visa or cancellation document, a digital photo and, if required, a Police Clearance Certificate. See our maid visa document checklist for specifications.

We then handle the government steps, including typing, the medical test and Emirates ID registration, and keep you updated throughout.

What a Change of Sponsor Costs

The Expat Maids 2-year visa package costs AED 10,999 paid once on the Upfront plan, or AED 8,499 upfront plus AED 150 a month on the Flexible plan, excluding 5% VAT. These are standard prices before any current promotion.

Both plans cover the residence visa, work permit, health insurance, medical test, Emirates ID, a salary card with salary transfers through the Wages Protection System (WPS), gratuity and HR support. The Upfront plan also covers her repatriation flight ticket at the end of service. On the Flexible plan, you pay for the ticket as part of her end-of-service benefits. Our team confirms the price for her case before you commit.

If you remain her sponsor, you pay the government and processing fees yourself, and MOHRE asks for proof of family income of at least AED 25,000 a month. Our typing services for private sponsors can handle the paperwork for you.

Summary: Maid Sponsorship Transfer Without Leaving the UAE

A maid can change sponsor without leaving the UAE, but her visa does not transfer. Her current sponsor cancels it, then the new sponsor applies for a new visa through a change of status. During a valid contract, the move needs her current employer’s written consent or a court ruling. After cancellation, she must change status before the date on her cancellation document, with any absconding report or labour complaint closed first.
